In March 1967 Havana hosted the first Festival de la Canción Protesta at Casa de las Américas. This event marked the birth of Cuba's nueva trova movement, featuring young singer-songwriters like Silvio Rodríguez and Pablo Milanés performing socially and politically conscious songs. It launched a new era of lyrical, folk-inspired protest music in Cuba.
